  My (short) must-read book list:

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America
by Barbara Ehrenreich (Owl Books 2002)

  A shocking dose of reality...

Crimes Against Nature by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
(HarperCollins 2004)

  It’s the environment, stupid.

Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity
by Bruce Bawer (Crown 1997)

Bawer’s important history of American fundamentalism, which grows more relevant each year.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry (Vintage 2001)
One of my favorite novels of all time.

On the Rez by Ian Frazier (Picador 2001)
A master writer lifts the cloak of cultural invisibility that has traditionally covered the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I read this book years ago, but I think about the people in it almost every day.

The Forest for the Trees: An Editor’s Advice to Writers by Betsy Lerner
(Riverhead 2001)

The essential guide to the publishing world for writers of all genres. Read this before you submit your work to an agent or editor.

The power of art in a most worthy cause:

Founded by Moscow artist Maria Yeliseyeva, Maria’s Children (www.mariaschildren.org) is an organization that uses art therapy to help Russian orphans develop skills and integrate with society. Maria began this project to address the nightmarish situations facing Russia’s more than 750,000 orphans, and she is literally saving lives, a few children at a time. The organization has grown substantially due to several committed people including an American physician, Jan Adams, and Patch Adams (no relation), the subject of the film Patch starring Robin Williams. Many charities need our help these days, but every bit of support to this group has a tremendous impact on young lives.
